Decimals : Addition & Subtraction

1. Addition of Decimals Using Column Method

Rule:

👉 Line up the decimal points carefully, so each digit is in the correct column (ones under ones, tenths under tenths, etc.).

👉 Add from right to left, just like with whole numbers.

👉 If the columns don’t line up neatly (different numbers of digits), add zeros to fill in the gaps.

✏️ Example 1) 9.36 + 7.23 = ?

✏️ Example 2) 49.365 + 7.2 = ?

Adding decimals without lining them up? That’s math madness!

2. Subtraction of Decimals Using Column Method

Rule:

👉 Line up the decimal points carefully.

👉 Subtract from right to left, borrowing if needed.

👉 Add zeros if the numbers don’t have the same number of digits after the decimal point.

✏️ Example 1) 6.54 − 2.41 = ?

✏️ Example 2) 54.132 − 6.8 =?

3. Special Case: When the second number has more decimal places

✏️ Example) 7.4 − 2.465 = ?

Step-by-step:

1)First, line up decimal points.

2) Add zeros so they have the same number of digits after the decimal

3) Now subtract:
