Compass Directions
Let’s Get Learning!
🧭 Compasses have been used for centuries to help people find their way.
By learning compass directions, you’ll be able to describe locations and navigate maps with confidence.
🌟 Four-Point Compass (Cardinal Directions)
The four main directions are called the cardinal points.
These are: North (N), East (E), South (S), and West (W).
Each one is opposite another: North is opposite South, and East is opposite West. Each point is separated by 90 degrees.

🌟 Eight-Point Compass (Intercardinal Directions)
To get more detail, we add directions between the main four.
These are: Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), Southwest (SW), Northwest (NW).
With these additions, there are eight directions in total.
Each point is separated by 45 degrees when using compass bearings.

🌟 Sixteen-Point Compass (Secondary Intercardinals)
To be even more precise, the compass can be divided into 16 points.
These include in-between directions such as:
North-Northeast (NNE) (between North and Northeast).
East-Southeast (ESE) (between East and Southeast).
West-Southwest (WSW) (between West and Southwest).
North-Northwest (NNW) (between North and Northwest).
On a 16-point compass, each point is separated by 22.5 degrees.
This gives much finer detail than a four-point compass.

🌟 Compass Bearings and Degrees
A compass is a circle of 360 degrees.
North is at 0° (and also 360°).
East is at 90°, South at 180°, and West at 270°.
Bearings help measure exact directions. For example:
Turning 45° from North points you to Northeast.
Turning 135° from North points you to Southeast.

🌟 Why More Points?
A 4-point compass is useful for basic navigation.
An 8-point compass is better for general directions.
A 16-point compass provides greater precision, useful for navigation at sea, in the air, or detailed map reading.
✅ Top Tips for Compass Directions
🧭 Remember the rhyme: Never Eat Shredded Wheat (North, East, South, West).
🧭 Opposites: North ↔ South, East ↔ West.
🧭 Angles:
90° = right angle turn (N → E, E → S, etc.)
45° = halfway direction (N → NE).
22.5° = smallest step on a 16-point compass.
🧭 Build it step by step:
Learn 4 points first.
Add the diagonals for 8 points.
Then add the in-betweens for 16 points.
🧭 Practice with a map: Stand facing North, then turn in degrees to see where you end up.
🧭 Use bearings for accuracy when describing directions in geography.
